Women’s Newsletter: What does Retirement look like to you?
Retirement is usually the next chapter of the book for most women. There’s usually an interest, a hobby, family or a dream that is leading women to retire. Those are generally the top retirement goals for the majority of women I talk to nearing retirement. I encourage you to not let retirement be a number; allow your retirement to be about you and your interests.
So, what do retired women do? From hearing from retired women plus from the Forbes article, Retirement Life: Women and Men Do It Very Differently, here are the popular activities:
- Spending time alone with personal interests
- Spending time family
- Socializing with friends
- Volunteering in their community
- Fitness
- Caring for others
- Being creative
- Travel
When we take people through their plan and ask about retirement most people have a vision; what is your vision? What do you want to do in retirement and what will be fulfilling to you? Many women will say the age they will retire, but it’s not really the age it’s more where their life will be and what they can do at that time. Sometimes retirement is when they think grandchildren will be born, when they can start social security and spend that money on traveling, when they are at full retirement at work and start their own business. I know when I’m retiring and it has nothing to do with an age (I have to guess so I can do my plan), but it has to do with a goal and family. What about you? Start thinking about your retirement now and what to expect from retirement so that when you get there you will start living out your vision.
