What’s Your Favorite Prayer?
As many of you know, we converse with our clients and friends often. Many times during these talks, we share personal anecdotes about grandchildren, children, vacations, family, and whatever’s going on – you get the gist of it.
Something interesting happened during one of these calls. My friend mentioned she had remarried, I asked, “How’s your husband?”. “Good,” she said, “he’s younger, ten years younger.” “How did you meet?” I asked.
I Paraphrase: She relays to me, “I prayed: Lord I feel that it’s time to settle down with a good Catholic man that understands my idiosyncrasies, and I understand his, we enjoy life, travel together, and — p.s. Lord, I know you have a sense of humor, so bring him to my house.” And, her prayer was answered – a fella showed up.
And now for the story. The fella, her current husband, turns out, was a coworker needing a place to live. After a fashion, he became her tenant. One day he says, “we need to talk”, – She was scared he was leaving. Instead, he declared his love to her.
My favorite prayer is Shepard’s Prayer: “Oh God, please help me not to JJJJ – up.” Alan Shepard, first astronaut we sent into space, uttered this supplication on an open microphone while sitting on top of a Mercury rocket immediately before launch. I say it every time I sit in my racecar on the grid before every race – my crew chief always responds with the Amen.
