Tommy Aaron. The 1973 Masters champion.
Meet my friend Tommy Aaron, a Gainesville, GA resident and the winner of the 1973 Masters Tournament.
Tommy and me at the Gainesville High School Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
I have breakfast every so often with this living legend, and he is a wonderful man to talk to over a meal. He loves to tell stories about his time playing golf, especially his time on the Ryder Cup teams. Tommy is very proud of how he had to the right to represent the U.S.A. alongside Palmer and Nicklaus.
However, when we talk, he most enjoys talking about his time playing quarterback for Gainesville High School. I love to hear him talk about playing at City Park and traveling all over Northeast Georgia on the day’s buses. At the Gainesville High School Hall of Fame banquet, he talked about how proud he was to play for a great school and team like Gainesville. Golf was nothing back then, and football was everything. So, this two-sport star played football in between refining his golf swing the rest of the year. So, if you ever meet Tommy, please ask him about his time as a Red Elephant.
