Meet my friend Micah Owings
Proud to support Micah at the GHS HOF banquet.
Micah was recently inducted into the Gainesville High School Hall of Fame, and I was there to congratulate him and his wonderful family. Micah one two state baseball championships while he was the star pitcher for the Red Elephants. He holds the Georgia high school record for home runs at 69 for a career, and he ranks fourth in the nation for career home runs! I think his most impressive high school stat is he only walked three people, yes only three, for the entire year!

Micah was drafted by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the 2005 draft, and he became the team’s fifth starter in 2007. On August 18, 2007, Micah started on the mound against his hometown team the Atlanta Braves. He pitched 7.0 innings, allowing three hits, three earned runs and had seven strikeouts. Impressive, but his performance at the plate is what truly stood out on that historic night. Micah went 4 for 5 including two home runs, scoring four times, and he had six RBI. He became the first pitcher ever with four hits, four runs and six RBI in one game!

Micha’s sports accomplishments are off the charts, but you would never know he was so great if you ever meet him. The man is always humble and gracious, and he always wants to know about you without ever talking about himself. When the Owings family moved to Gainesville some around the county and state were none too happy. The family was called, by some, a wealthy family only looking to promote their kid’s careers. I got furious about such comments because it was far from the truth. The entire family embraced Gainesville and got involved in the community. To this day Micah and his brothers, Jon Mark and Josh still give back to the community by helping teach kids the great game of baseball.

The last and most impressive thing anyone can say about Micah is that he loves his family. Besides his Christian faith, his family is the most important aspect of his life. His sisters Rebecca Gunyon and Abi Tuiasosopu, brothers Josh and Jon Mark, brothers-in-law Matt Tuiasosopu and Dan Gunyon, sister-in-law Meredith, and most important parents Jim and Danise. They all mean the world to Micah, and I can truly say the entire Owings family has also blessed my life.
