Fair Street Tigers
I had the pleasure and honor to meet Gene Carrithers at the Gainesville High School Athletics Hall of Fame Banquet on 4/20/2019. His 1956 and 1957 Fair Street High School football teams were being honored for their two state championship.
Mr. Carrithers was the starting halfback on the 1956 and 1957 Fair Street High football state championship teams. Coached by E. L. Cabbell, the teams were known for great defense and talented athletes on the offense. Mr. Carithers was an elusive running back, and many say he was the precursor to the great Barry Sanders.

The Tigers won their first championship by defeating the Claxton Longhorns in 1956 ending with a 12-1 record. The next year the Tigers went 16-0 defeating Thomasville for back-to-back championships. I was honored Mr. Carrithers allowed me to sit with him and ask him many questions. I plan to keep the legacy of this fine man and the Fair Street Tigers alive and well from now on in our great town!
